Establishing A Cub Scout Pack In Mellen

Scouting America (formally Boy Scouts of America) is alive and well in the Glacial Trails District (Iron, Ashland, Douglas, Bayfield Counties). We have programs for boys and girls in grades K-5 (Cub Scouts) and Grades 6-12 (Troops).

We are working to establish a Pack in Mellen. As an adult, if you would be interested in leading/supporting this effort as a volunteer, please reach out to Pat Jarvis at (571) 241-9260 or email Patrick.jarvis@scouting.org.

Cub Scouts are at that magical age where everything is new and possible and, most importantly, fun. They build things. Play with purpose. Make friends and work together. The life lessons learned in scouting help form a foundation to embrace opportunity and overcome obstacles in life. Cub Scouting is a year-round program uniquely designed to meet the needs of young boys and girls and their families. The program offers fun and challenging activities that promote character development and physical fitness. Family involvement is an essential part of the program, and parents are encouraged to play an active role. Cub Scouting helps parents make the most of the time they have, to impact the lives of their children.

For any adult (parents, grandparents, aunts, uncles, and other relatives of youth) who want to get involved in Scouting we encourage you to volunteer for any of our leadership positions in the Cub Scout Packs, Troops, or at the District level. There are many volunteer positions that can make a difference in a child’s life. This is also an excellent way to give back to the community and to serve youth in our District. You do not have to be related to a youth in the program to get involved.

Families can get involved by calling/texting Mr. Pat Jarvis, Glacial Trails District Executive, at (571) 241-9260 or email Patrick.jarvis@scouting.org. Financial assistance is available to help families in need participate in the program.

Rock Church Becomes Summit South

We are excited to share some big news with the community! The Rock Church is becoming Summit South as we join Summit Church (formerly Salem Church) in Ashland as a campus. The Rock has been a part of this wonderful community for many years, and we are deeply grateful for your continued welcome.

As we step into this new chapter, we want to express our heartfelt thanks for welcoming us and allowing us to serve and participate in the community. Moving forward, we’re thrilled to introduce our new leadership team! Our Lead Pastor, Jacob Rahrig, will preach from Summit in Ashland with live-streamed messages shared regularly on Sunday mornings, our campus Pastor Travis Larson will be in Mellen weekly for Wednesday night ministries, Thursday office visits, and Sunday morning services.

We are committed to continuing many of the community traditions The Rock established while eagerly embracing new opportunities to build relationships and participate in this special community. Our goals as a church are to share the love of Christ, and teach God’s word from the Bible.

Love to Read? Want to Meet Other Readers?

Mellen’s Legion Memorial Library has two monthly book clubs that meet at the library. One meets the 2nd Monday of the month at 6:00 pm and the other on the third Wednesday at 9:00 am. The list of books and book club dates may be found on their website at legionmemoriallibrary.org. Click on Find Books, then Book Clubs to find the books they are reading. Click on Events to see the calendar of library events. The book for the Monday night October discussion will be “1984” by George Orwell. Books are provided by the library so no need to purchase any books.

More information about the library can be found on the City Services page. If you would like to join a book club, call 715-274-8331 or stop by the library and let them know. Think about it. It’s a fun way to meet other readers, find a new author, and read books you never knew you would like (or dislike)!
