Northern Wisconsin Libraries Celebrate National Library Card Sign-Up Month in September  Sign up for a library card at a Northern Waters Library Network location during the month of September and you could win a $50 prize!  It may be small, but a library card packs a mighty punch! With one card, you can borrow museum passes, musical instruments, tools, and more from the 30 libraries in the Northern Waters Library Network! Your library also offers engaging programs like book clubs, movie nights, crafting classes, and lectures, access to technology instruction and free Wi-Fi, career resources, and more! It’s one card with endless possibilities!  September is National Library Card Sign-Up Month so it’s the perfect time to get a library card if you don’t already have one! Sign up for a library card at a NWLN library from September 1-30, or self-register for an e-card, and you’ll be automatically entered into a prize drawing for a $50 Visa gift card! Already a NWLN cardholder? You can enter the drawing by telling us why you love your library! Over this year’s 4th of July, members of the Mellen Fire Department were injured in a tragic fireworks accident. These members put their lives on the line every day for us. Now it’s our turn to show up for them.
Join a fundraiser to help cover their medical expenses, recovery needs, and support for their families during this difficult time.

Join us at the Summit South Church on Wednesday, August 20th from 4 – 7 p.m. for a time of community and free food during our Back-To-School-Giveaway for students in our community preK through 12th grade while supplies last!

The City of Mellen is having a Flea/Farmers Market on Saturday, August 16th and Saturday, August 23rd from 9:00 a.m. until 12:00 noon. The Market will be held on the vacant corner lot of West Bennett Avenue and Highway 13/South Main Street (kitty-corner from City Hall). This event will be free for any interested vendors. It’s that time of year again, it’s time to “Pack the Backpacks”! Annually in August, Rich and Carol Becker, a local Mellen couple, ask the community for donations of school supplies and money. They gather the donations and purchase school supplies to fill backpacks for Pre-K thru 5th grade with all the required school supplies for students in need in the Mellen School District. Their goal is to fill at least two backpacks per grade. Leftover supplies are given to the Mellen School to have on hand for students who might need them. Empty backpacks and school supply lists are on display during the month of August in Mellen at both local financial institutions, Northern State Bank and Superior Choice Credit Union. Rich and Carol have been “Packing the Backpacks” since 2009.

Come to the FREE Small Business Clinic on Thursday, July 31st, from 9 AM to 4 PM at Northwood Technical College. It’s a FREE, in-person event with workshops, resource providers, and one-on-one consulting sessions. All are welcome! You’ll be able to talk with folks who know marketing, legal, business planning, accounting, small business taxes, and more. As a bonus, you’ll get to connect with local and statewide organizations that support entrepreneurs. Workshops will run throughout the day, and you can sit in on sessions that make sense for you. It’s a good chance to get questions answered, meet other business owners, and learn what help is out there.
