Ashland County Aging Unit – Providing Senior Assistance in Ashland County

Ashland County Housing Authority – the main office is located in Mellen serving 6 northern Wisconsin counties. They assist people and families who qualify with housing, housing assistance, weatherization, heating assistance, and electric assistance among other things.

Bay Area Rural Transit (BART) – main office is located in Ashland, WI.  BART is a bus company with bus routes that run north to Bayfield, south to Phillips, and west to Odanah. Rates are reduced for seniors aged 60+ and/or those with a disability as well as youth (age 6-18). Children under 6 are free when accompanied by an adult. A bus stops in Mellen on Mondays and Thursdays.

The BRICK’s Helping Hands Food Shelf – is located in the north part of the Mellen City Hall building.  They are open the third Thursday of every month from 11:00am to 5:00pm.  They are a service for families and individuals in the Mellen area provided by volunteers, the Mellen community, and the BRICK Ministries. We are neighbors helping our neighbors in need. Refer to their website for more information. The Brick’s main office is in Ashland, WI across from Super One Foods.

Senior Meals Dining Options In The Area starting 2026

The Ashland County Aging Unit has added some additional dining options to their Senior Meals in the area.

Their traditional meal site is located in Sanborn at the United Methodist Church located at 42745 County Hwy E, Ashland on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays, with meal service at 11:15 a.m. They also offer their home delivery in Ashland, Sanborn, Mellen, Glidden and Butternut and the current menu in the Mellen Weekly newspaper usually found on page 2 is for the Sanborn site and home delivery.

You must be age 60 or older and enrolled in the Ashland County Senior Meals Program. Reservations are REQUIRED for the Ashland, Mellen and Sanborn sites at least two business days before the meal. No reservations are required for the Glidden and Butternut Restaurant sites, but you MUST be a registered participant and sign in at the site. Call the Main office for reservations or for more information at 715-682-4414.

Ashland – Breakfast on Fridays at 9:00a.m. at the Presbyterian Church, 214 Vaughn Ave, Ashland (enter the building on the library side). RESERVATIONS REQUIRED

Mellen – Thur., Apr. 30th at the NEW Granite Digger’s Cafe at the Mellen School with coffee and treats starting at 11:00 a.m, with dining starting at 11:30 a.m. RESERVATIONS REQUIRED

Mellen (starting May 6th, 2026) Wednesdays and Thursdays at the Granite Digger’s Cafe. RESERVATIONS REQUIRED

Glidden – Tuesdays and Wednesdays from 11:30 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. you can go to Lena’s Bar & Grill at 51 Grant St, Glidden and order from the special Cafe 60 menu.

Butternut – Wednesday’s and Thursday’s from 11:30 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. at the Butternut Cafe located at 309 5th St, Butternut. They also have a Cafe 60 menu to order from.

Wholly Threads Limited Mellen Thrift Shop/Wholly Threads is a thrift store located on Bennett Avenue in Mellen. They take donations of clothing, housewares, toys, books, etc. and resell those items at a very reduced rate. They are also known to help those in need.  Wholly Threads Limited is a nonprofit organization formed in 1996 by representation from local area churches. Check out Thrift Store News in the local weekly paper, the Mellen Weekly-Record, to find out what is happening at the thrift store. Stop in and see what they have for sale and say hi to the volunteers. We do not accept credit or debit cards. Cash or check only!
