Ashland County Aging Unit – Providing Senior Assistance in Ashland County
Ashland County Housing Authority – the main office is located in Mellen serving 6 northern Wisconsin counties. They assist people and families who qualify with housing, housing assistance, weatherization, heating assistance, and electric assistance among other things.

Bay Area Rural Transit (BART) – main office is located in Ashland, WI. BART is a bus company with bus routes that run north to Bayfield, south to Phillips, and west to Odanah. Rates are reduced for seniors aged 60+ and/or those with a disability as well as youth (age 6-18). Children under 6 are free when accompanied by an adult. A bus stops in Mellen on Mondays and Thursdays.

The BRICK’s Helping Hands Food Shelf – is located in the north part of the Mellen City Hall building. They are open the third Thursday of every month from 11:00am to 5:00pm. They are a service for families and individuals in the Mellen area provided by volunteers, the Mellen community, and the BRICK Ministries. We are neighbors helping our neighbors in need. Refer to their website for more information. The Brick’s main office is in Ashland, WI across from Super One Foods.

Senior Nutrition Program (Senior Dining Sites and Meals on Wheels) – sponsored by the Ashland County Aging Unit, Inc. Meals are available on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays on site. Home Delivery only on Tuesdays and Fridays. Mellen residents are welcome at any site as there is no longer a meal site in Mellen. Meals are available for individuals who are 60 and older regardless of income or assets. The weekly menu is published in the Mellen Weekly Record. Wholly Threads Limited – Mellen Thrift Shop/Wholly Threads is a thrift store located on Bennett Avenue in Mellen. They take donations of clothing, housewares, toys, books, etc. and resell those items at a very reduced rate. They are also known to help those in need. Wholly Threads Limited is a nonprofit organization formed in 1996 by representation from local area churches. Check out Thrift Store News in the local weekly paper, the Mellen Weekly-Record, to find out what is happening at the thrift store. Stop in and see what they have for sale and say hi to the volunteers. We do not accept credit or debit cards. Cash or check only!
